What is the difference between an attorney and a lawyer in Ukraine?

An attorney (advokat) is a lawyer who has passed a qualification exam and received a bar certificate from the Bar Council. Only an attorney has the right to represent clients in criminal cases (Art. 45 CPC), provide legal assistance as defense counsel in criminal proceedings, and access case materials under attorney-client privilege. A lawyer without bar status can consult, draft documents, and represent interests in civil and commercial cases (by power of attorney), but cannot be defense counsel in criminal proceedings.
